In general, you should plan to leave your carpet to dry for at least a full 6 hours after it has been cleaned. In some cases, you might actually be able to return your furniture to the carpet within a few hours, but you should check with the company to see what they recommend.
You want the carpet to be dry before you start walking across it or moving things around. How long it needs for drying time will depend on the process and the cleaning solution used as well. Things like fans, heaters, and open windows (when the weather is nice) can help speed up drying time.
